T20 WC: Russell, Hosein star for West Indies as PNG manage to get 136/8 on board

bulletin

Guyana (West Indies), June 2: A clinical performance with the ball for West Indies kept Papua New Guinea’s batters at bay and held them to 136/8 in the second match of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Providence Stadium on Sunday.

It was a clinical outing for the West Indies bowlers as they decided to bowl after winning the toss. With three spinners at his disposal, Powell decided to hand the ball to left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein to bowl in the powerplay.

In the first over of the match, Hosein enjoyed the innings available and conceded just one single.

Romario Shepherd applied most of the pressure and removed Tony Ura (2) by forcing an outside edge.

Hosein cast Lega Siaka on the first ball of the third over with a seaming delivery, giving West Indies complete control of proceedings.

From then on, Sese Bau and PNG skipper Assad Vala tried to forge a partnership. They tried to take the pressure off by sending Vala the ball into the stands through extra cover. A tossed up throw, followed by the sweet sound of timing, sent the ball flying over the string with ease.

In the final of the power play, Vala (21) tried to make the best of the situation. He managed two boundaries from the over before losing his wicket on the last ball of the powerplay. Roston Chase caught a stunner to hand Alzarri Joseph his first wicket of the tournament.

Bau stayed at the crease and kept the scoreboard ticking by setting boundaries at every possible opportunity.

Wickets continued to fall at the other end but Bau did not stop to find the fence of deliveries falling into his strike zone. His 44-run stand with Charles Amini was the driving force behind PNG’s total.

With a single on the first ball of the 16th over, Bau lifted his bat for a fifty. His record time on the field came to an end after Joseph clipped the bails from the stumps with a slower cutter.

Chad Soper (10) and Kiplin Doriga (27*) played influential knocks towards the end, pushing PNG to 136/8.

Short score: Papua New Guinea 136/8 (Sese Bau 50, Kiplin Doriga 27*; Andre Russell 2-19, Alzarri Joseph 2-24) vs West Indies.
