Offaly athlete qualifies for the European Athletics Championships in Rome

OFFALY runner Laura Mooney has been selected by Athletics Ireland for the upcoming European Athletics Championships in Rome from June 7 to 12.

Cappincur woman Laura will compete in the 10,000m at the Stadio Olimpico in the Italian capital on Tuesday, June 11. In April, Laura set a new PR over the distance of 33:00.20 at the Raleigh Relays, Raleigh, North Carolina.

Laura studies at Providence College in Rhode Island, where she is mentored by world-renowned distance coach Ray Treacy. She steadily progressed up the rankings, finishing sixth in the 5000 meters at the 2021 European U20 Athletics Championships in Tallinn, Estonia.

Laura also represented Ireland at the European Cross Country Championships in 2021 and 2022.

Laura is the third of Tullamore Harriers’ youth squad to achieve a senior international in the past twelve months. Ava O’Connor competed at the European Team Athletics Championships in Poland and Danielle Donegan competed at the World Cross Country Championships in Serbia.
