VCU hoops schedule updates: Boston College, Bellarmine

bulletin

The VCU men’s basketball team’s 2024-2025 schedule is slowly coming into focus, with a handful of non-conference games announced in the past week.

Highlighting that group of matches is a trip to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland to face Boston College in the Veterans Classic on November 8.

VCU Athletics officially announced that game Wednesday, scheduled for a 6 p.m. tipoff at Navy’s Alumni Hall. The Midshipmen host Harvard in the nightcap at 8:30 p.m., with both games airing on CBS Sports Network.

Rams coach Ryan Odom, who is entering his second season, is familiar with the Veterans Classic. Odom’s 2021 Utah State team defeated Richmond in the same event.

“We are excited to be part of the Veterans Classic this year,” said Odom.

“I had the opportunity to participate in this event a few years ago, and I can’t say enough good things about the experience, especially the opportunity for our players to explore the Naval Academy. We have the utmost respect for coach (Earl) Grant and the Boston College program, and it will undoubtedly be a great test for our team.

Additionally, unconfirmed reports have VCU hosting Loyola Maryland on Nov. 16.

VCU’s Zeb Jackson, shown during a January loss to St. Bonaventure, says the team was unhappy that no Rams were recognized on the all-defensive Atlantic 10 team. Jackson has nine steals in two A-10 tournament games.

Competitively, the games against Bellarmine and Loyola Maryland are early-season buy games. VCU likely paid its opponents to make those trips and will be heavily favored in both games.

The meeting with Boston College is more important. Aside from the patriotic symbolism of participating in the Veterans Classic, the Eagles are an ACC opponent that finished 8-12 in conference play last year.

BC finished 71st nationally in adjusted efficiency, 55th offensively and 101st defensively, according to Kenpom.com. VCU finished 75th overall, 121st offensively and 40th defensively.

So it appears the Eagles and Rams are a good matchup, an opponent that won’t make or break VCU’s season, but one that can serve as a litmus test to evaluate how the Rams stack up against the Power Five -League.
