Berwick woman charged with drink driving causing death

A Berwick woman is facing a driving ban following a fatal collision that occurred on Ridge Road near Wolfville.

The two-vehicle collision occurred around 2:30 p.m. on June 5, when RCMP say a Hyundai Santa Fe failed to negotiate a curve, left the roadway and struck a woman and a Toyota Corolla that were along the roadway.

The stricken woman was standing next to the Corolla. She has since been identified as an 87-year-old Berwick woman and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Corolla suffered only minor injuries.

The driver of the Santa Fe, identified as a 37-year-old woman, showed signs of impairment, according to the RCMP.

She was arrested and transported to the Kings District East RCMP Detachment in New Minas where she was tested for impairment.

RCMP have charged her with operating while impaired resulting in death. She was taken into custody and is scheduled to appear in Kentville provincial court on June 6.

One child was also in Santa Fe and was transported to the hospital by EHS for observation.

Ridge Road was closed for several hours for cleanup and to conduct the investigation, but has since reopened.
