Providence and South Point win the NCHSAA tennis state championships on Monday


Two undefeated Charlotte-area boys tennis teams won dual NCHSAA state championships on Monday.

After last week’s rainy weather delayed the finals by two days, Providence and South Point ended up atop the medal stands.

A summary:

After losing 5-1 to Green Hope, from the Raleigh area, in the 2023 finals, Providence got a little revenge this year by winning 5-4.

After the singles match the teams were tied at 3-3. Providence earned singles victories over Jack DiMenna, Daniel Rohlman and Collin Cushman.

And in doubles, Rohlman and Grant Patridge defeated Green Hope’s 2024 individual doubles champions, Stephen Gervase and Vivek Indlamuri, 8-6. DiMenna and Toby Stamps also won their matches as the Panthers took home the title.

Providence finished 18-0 and won its second title in four appearances. Rohlman was named MVP of the championship.

In 3A, South Point defeated Wilson Fike 5-3 to win its first state title.

The Red Raiders won four of six singles matches and got the winning point from their doubles duo of Shive Patel and Brandon Cunningham. Patel, James Dover, Brandon Cunningham and Tyler Cunningham all won singles matches.

South Point finished the season 16-0.

NCHSAA Softball

Piedmont 5, Oak Grove 4: Piedmont rallied from a 4-3 deficit to eliminate top-seeded Oak Grove 5-4 in a 3A girls softball West match Monday night.

The Panthers scored once in the top of the sixth inning and got the winning run in the seventh. Sarah Belk had three hits and Tara Deese drove in two runs. Piedmont will face Kings Mountain for the 3A West regional championship.

NCHSAA Football

Marvin Ridge 4, West Forsyth 2: No. No. 6 Marvin Ridge defeated No. 3 seed West Forsyth on the road. Marvin Ridge (12-4-5) won its fourth straight game and will host Myers Park in the regional semifinals on Thursday.

Mooresville 1, Watauga 0: No. 8 seed Mooresville upset the top-seeded Pioneers in Boone in double overtime. Mooresville will play Asheville in the regional round on Thursday. Asheville defeated Charlotte Catholic 2-1 on Monday.

Mooresville (17-3-2) won its third straight game and ended Watauga’s four-game win streak.

Cameron Cline, the current Observer’s girls player of the week, scored the winning goal for the Blue Devils.

South Point 3, Hickory 2: The Red Raiders trailed 2-1 at halftime but scored a pair of goals to win and continue a bid to return to the state championship game. South Point reached the state finals for the first time last season.

Pine Lake Preparation 10, Bandys 1: Pine Lake Prep, the No. 1 seed in the 2A West, got four goals and three assists from Avery Garrett in an easy victory. Pine Lake Prep will host West Davidson of Brevard in the regional semifinals.

Christ the King 2, Bishop McGuinness 0: Christ The King (16-3) won its 10th straight game to advance to the regional semifinals.

NCHSAA 1A/3A rail

Five Observer area athletes won 3A state championships Monday, and Mountain Island Charter’s boys won two relay events. Greensboro’s Dudley High won the boys and girls state team championships.

Six Observer-area athletes won 1A state championships at NC A&T on Monday. Due to weather conditions, the event was postponed to Saturday.

Two of the six winners won two events each: Corvian Community’s Carson Williams (800, 1,600); and Union Academy’s Evan Pardue (200, 400).

Swain County won the boys and girls team championships.
