Driver killed when car crashed into convoy, vehicle ‘burst into flames’ near airport

bulletin

SALT LAKE CITY — A car crashed into a bridge support column on I-80 and caught fire, killing the driver early Saturday, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

The vehicle left the roadway on the westbound ramp of I-80 heading toward Salt Lake City International Airport about 3:18 a.m. and struck a column supporting the overpass above, UHP Cpl. said Mike Alexander.

State troopers and firefighters arrived on scene and found the vehicle actively burning, a news release said.

“The vehicle became completely engulfed and fire personnel responded to extinguish the fire,” Alexander said. “At that time they found the driver, who was fatally injured, still in the vehicle.”

Scorch marks are still visible on the bridge. No information has been released about the victim.
